African Wax Prints in the Triangle

Ankara, Kente, Wax Print so many choices!!

So I admit I have  slight love affair with the print. It's the colors like red which I wore for a year. and Orange that i wore another year, i alway had an affection for nice colors. African wax prints lets me have several at once. The patterns are beautiful. This obsession is not exclusive to me. Internet searches had proved that its a slight trend in this look. Okay not a big enough trend for Google but enough for my Facebook feed to be a little brighter.

My lovely husband brought back these 3 dress after a trip home and that was it. Did you know that custom made dresses is common in Africa. If you want a dress just send your measurements. This is great not how do we get this custom made dress way from Africa , no lovely husbands for everyone right ?

Preparing for Carib Mask 2014

I recently had the pleasure of attending a general meeting for the Raleigh Durham Afro Carribean Association. For those who don't know, this is the organization responsible for bringing Carib Mask to Raleigh.  For the past two years downtown Raleigh has exploded with the sounds of Soca and Reggae music. Even if it's only for one day it's an event to remember. Ladies in extravagant feathered and sequence costumes and bands parade down the Fayetteville street route. While thousand of on looker wave flags from every island. It's just a touch of the carnival experience, here is Raleigh! So when I heard the meeting would be open to the public, I was ready to go see what this would be about. They where in fact preparing for 2014 carnival. It's registration time for everything from participating in the parade to being vendors. So if you or your organization want to be a part of this years CaribMask I have few details for you. Contact RDACA lol. Remember I said ...

African artist recent visit to Raleigh

In March I was invited to attend an event entitled an African Experience. When I heard it would be held at a local park I imagined a fun filled family event. Since the flyer showcased things like African attire and mentioned food. I was more than anxious to see what the agenda was for the day. I have attended many African events but they were usually traditional or family occasions. I am familiar with the food, culture and I'm a big fan of the music. So, I put on one of my new African outfits and recruited some teenagers to be volunteers for the event.   Uche Nwosu and his wife We arrived to banquet style occasions celebrating an African artist who had traveled from Nigeria. I guess I missed the last word of the title "An African Experience  Exhibition "  It was hosted by the lovely Dr. Alycia Davis and Featured Uche Nwosu. ( say that 5 times fast)  He travel here at the request of a local organization who wanted to share his artwork . His wo...

Hurricane Matthew Aftermath

Its been a troubling week in America with hurricane Matthew passing through the East coast, the Election candidates being less than ideal and the ongoing discussion of police brutality. I found it particularly sobering to watch the news and see how all of our differences can be washed away. We can't help but recognize the benefits of being American,  when faced with the comparison of the effects of the hurricane against our neighbors. Varying number have been reported from Haiti giving the death toll between 800-900 people. In the U.S we have had just a 10th of this number lost to flood waters. A still staggering number given consideration to the infrastructures, weather warning, and evacuations meant to protect people and avoid such casualties. Each life is precious and while we work to reconstruct homes, reopen schools, and return to our normal lives, it's my hope that we also turn down the noisy radio static of conflict within our communities. This State has renewed ...
